Flame Arrestor

what is a flame arrestor?A Flame Arrestor is a passive safety device which prevents the propagation of a flame in a pipeline, into a defined volume or out of a defined volume.

How does a flame arrestor work?

A flame arrestor normally allows a flow of gas through the pipeline under operating conditions. The flame works to quench the flame and bring the gas/vapour mixture temperature below its ignition point on exit of the flame arrestor preventing re ignition. Flexachem, are the localised support for the Cashco range of flame arrestors and venting solutions.

What are flame arrestors used for?

Flame arrestors are used to protect piping and tank systems with flammable contents from propagation of flame from a source of ignition

Where are flame arresters required?

Flame arresters are one of many types of safety devices which can be specified for flammable product storage or transfer to prevent the spread of flame.

Flame arresters are divided into many different classes and options as follows:

  • Location – in a pipeline (in-line) or at the end of a pipe/on a vessel nozzle (end-of-line)
  • Type of protection – Detonation (supersonic flame propagation), Deflagration (sub-sonic flame propagation, open-air deflagration for an end-of-line
  • Duration of protection – short-term burning, endurance burning

What is an end of line flame arrester?

An End of line flame arrester is one which is installed at the end of a pipeline or on a tank nozzle and is exposed to atmosphere.

What is a deflagration arrester?

Deflagration Flame arresters are used to protect against a flame which is propagating at a sub-sonic speed.

What are detonation arresters?

Detonation flame arresters are used to protect against a flame which is propagating at a supersonic speed.

How do you clean a flame arrester?

Details of cleaning procedures are contained in IOM’s of flame arresters. Generally, check with the manufacturer but any process which may affect the surface of the element is deemed unacceptable by most notified bodies.

How often should flame arresters be inspected?

As a flame arrester is a safety device it is important to consult with EHS and the site insurers to ensure you are complying with all requirements. The manufacturers will also have recommendations. It also depends on the application (stored media) i.e. is it crystallising, resinous, full of dust, corrosive etc.
